FAO: Two upcoming events on food security

, nutrition and small-scale fisheries are scheduled to be held over the next two weeks.

The first is the CFS 47 Side Event: Exploring the application of CFS instruments to address gender, youth, inequality and data systems in small-scale fisheries to be held on Monday 8 February 13:00-14:15 CEST.

In 2014, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) published HLPE 7 on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security and Nutrition. The same year, the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) were endorsed to the Committee on Fisheries (COFI). This side event will build upon the HLPE 7 recommendations and will draw attention to the mutually reinforcing nature of the SSF Guidelines and related CFS instruments. Through practical examples it will explore the synergistic implementation of these tools to address the issues of gender, youth, data systems and inequalities in small-scale fisheries to enhance their contribution to sustainable food systems.

The second event is a virtual seminar on Small Low-Cost Fish: From Bait to Plate, to be held on Monday 15 February- Tuesday 16 February 9:30-16:30 CET.

Small and low-cost fish, like sardines and mackerel, are recognized as being rich in micronutrients. They play an important role in preventing malnutrition of poor and undernourished people in developing countries.

In combination with researchers from four ongoing projects in Africa and Asia, FAO is organizing a virtual seminar on the contribution of small, low-cost fish to food security on February 15th and 16th, 2021.
