Shrimp boosted seafood exports figures during July

In the first 6 months of 2019, seafood export of the whole country reached 3.9 billion USD, down slightly by nearly 2% compared to the same period last year.

In July, the export of aquatic products showed positive signs when exporting shrimp and other products increased again, except for pangasius, so the export result in July increased by 9%, bringing the total seafood export by the end of July 2019, a total of 4.7 billion USD, nearly equal to the same period last year.

In July, export to major markets recovered, especially China market increased strongly by 51%, making the first 7 months' results to this market change completely, from 2% reduction after 6 months, after July increased by nearly 5%. By the end of July 2019, except for export to the EU, it was still lower than the same period last year (down nearly 10%), to South Korea decreased by 3%; Exports to other markets all grew positively (Japan increased by 11%, America increased by 2%)

Shrimp exports in the first 6 months of this year decreased by 12% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1.44 billion USD. In the first half of this year, shrimp production increased, raw shrimp prices decreased, while shrimp stocks in the markets were high, the supply of shrimp from other countries also increased, so the price of shrimp imported in the markets was lower than Last year, so shrimp export continued its downward trend from 2018.

After continuous decline in the first months of the year, in July 2019, shrimp exports began to recover with a promising increase of 13.4% to 334 million USD, bringing the results of export in the first 7 months to 1, 77 billion USD, down 8% compared to the same period last year. In particular, export of white shrimp reached 1.2 billion USD, accounting for 68%, while exporting tiger shrimp reached 384 million USD, accounting for 23%, marine shrimp accounted for 10% with 181 million USD.

In July, businesses boosted shrimp export to all major markets, especially to the US increased by 37%, China increased by 48%, Australia increased by 56%, so the total export of the first 7 months of the year was also positive. Exports to EU still have a negative growth of 21%, in which exports to major consuming countries in the region such as England, Germany and the Netherlands have reduced by 5%, 9% and 45% respectively, average prices for exporting shrimp to markets This decreased by 1 USD / kg compared to 2018.

In the Japanese market, although the export volume remained stable and the market demand did not increase, the average export price decreased by 1 USD / kg from 12 USD to 11 USD, making the export value to this market slightly decrease. 3% to $ 329 million. Meanwhile, shrimp prices from Thailand and Indonesia were stable at 11 USD / kg, Indian shrimp prices dropped slightly to 9.3 USD / kg.

Thanks to a strong increase in export in July, shrimp export to the US market in the first 7 months has increased by 5% compared to the same period last year, after decreasing continuously in the first 6 months due to high inventories. For the same period, the average import price decreased by 1.1 USD / kg over the same period last year.

Shrimp exports to China also increased slightly by nearly 2% thanks to July exports soared. In the first 5 months of the year, shrimp export of enterprises through quota and border trade is still difficult, so raw shrimp prices have not recovered. Currently, China is tightening trade borders and strengthening food safety control so exporting shrimp across the border is not accepted. Meanwhile, main shrimp export by sea still tends to increase. However, from June, white leg shrimp exports by sea to China increased by 1.5 times compared to the previous month, this trend is forecast to continue to bring positive results in the last months of the year.

In contrast to shrimp, Pangasius export continued to decrease by nearly 13% in July, so total export in the first 7 months decreased by 5.5% to 1.13 billion USD.

Export of pangasius to the US dropped sharply in the second quarter (down nearly 42%), dragging the first half export results down nearly 28% to 141 million USD, due to the impact of anti-dumping tax on POR14 period. Shrimp exports to the US in July fell further with 56%, making exports in the first 7 months to this market only reached 168 million USD, down 34%.

Excluding exports to China on a strong recovery momentum, up 71% in July, exports to other markets reversed in the worse direction, of which exports to EU decreased by 16%, to ASEAN by 14%, Mexico fell by 28 % and Brazil decreased by nearly 30%. Therefore, growth to EU after 7 months has slowed down compared to the first 6 months, increased by 12%, export to ASEAN increased by nearly 5%, to Mexico increased by nearly 13%. Leading the pangasius import markets, China has far surpassed the US and EU, with 320 million USD in the first 7 months, up 10% over the same period last year.

In the first 7 months of the year, export of seafood products reached over USD 1.8 billion, up 13% compared to the same period last year. In which tuna increased by 20% to USD 429 million, other marine fishes increased by 18% to USD 904 million, while octopus and octopus decreased by 3% to USD 341 million. Particularly in July, tuna export still increased by 16% while export of octopus and octopus decreased by 2.5%.
